How We Travel Responsibly — and What You Can Do Too

Local businesses, fair wages, support for young Tanzanians and plastic-free safaris — plus simple ways you can help.

Tanzania’s parks, wildlife and communities are the reason our guests come here — and the reason we do this work. We want every safari we run to leave something good behind. Here is how we go about it, and how you can help too.

Keeping the money local

A safari touches many livelihoods: guides, cooks, drivers, lodge staff, farmers and craftspeople. We try to make sure as much of what you spend as possible stays in Tanzania.

  • Local businesses first. We work with locally owned businesses wherever we can — from the lodges and camps we choose to the food and supplies we buy.
  • Fair pay for guides. We pay our guides a good wage. They take real pride in their work, and they can support their families with it.

Looking after people

  • Support for vulnerable youth. Each tour includes a donation to Umoja Tanzania, which works with vulnerable young people.
  • Opportunities for young Tanzanians. We offer work experience, training and mentoring.
  • Respectful cultural visits. When we visit indigenous communities, we do it appropriately and pay fair community contributions.
  • Good employers. We choose accommodation with trusted staff policies and a good reputation.

Our guides are paid fairly — and it shows in how they look after our guests.

Caring for the environment

  • Carbon offsetting. We offset the emissions from your safari vehicle through Carbon Tanzania, and we encourage you to offset your flights too.
  • No plastic bottles. Every guest gets a stainless-steel water bottle, with safe drinking water on board. Our tours are zero plastic.
  • Hot lunches, not lunch boxes. We serve hot lunches in reusable containers instead of disposable boxes.

What you can do

Responsible travel is a partnership. These small choices make a real difference:

  • Choose an ethical operator. Very cheap tours often cut corners — on wages, vehicles or the way animals are treated.
  • Listen to your guide. They know the animals, the rules and the communities you’ll meet.
  • Don’t chase a checklist. Rushing from one animal to the next to tick off the Big Five puts pressure on guides and wildlife. Enjoy what each day brings.
  • Give animals space. Keep a respectful distance unless they choose to come closer. Avoid any activity that lets you touch wild animals, such as lion-cub walks or elephant rides.
  • Think before you geotag. Poachers use social media to locate animals. Share your rhino photos — just leave the location off.
  • Cut your waste. Bring less rubbish into the parks, carry out what you can and refuse plastic bottles.
  • Give to projects, not at the roadside. Handing out money, pens or sweets to children can do more harm than good. Ask us how to support local projects instead.
  • Pay a fair price. For the things you buy and the services you use.

The best safaris leave the parks as wild as they found them — and the people who live around them better off.
