Supporting Young People with Umoja Tanzania

Why we support Umoja Tanzania, why many of our guests visit the Umoja Centre — and how you can pack for a purpose.

Our country’s greatest resource is its young people. That’s why we support Umoja Tanzania, an organisation that helps vulnerable young Tanzanians build safer, healthier and more independent lives.

About Umoja Tanzania

Umoja believes every young person has the right to a life free from poverty, abuse and exploitation. To thrive, young people need a rounded education, good physical and mental health, and a way to earn a living — so that is what Umoja works on.

Its programme builds self-confidence, nurtures skills and talents, and helps young people take control of their own lives. Participants often do better at school and go on to meaningful work, and many become leaders for positive change in their communities.

How we support Umoja

  • A donation from every tour. Part of each safari goes directly to Umoja’s work.
  • Sharing their story. We introduce Umoja to guests from around the world, so more people know about the project.
  • Visits to the centre. We bring guests to meet the team and the young people they work with.

Visiting the Umoja Centre

Most of our itineraries include a visit to the Umoja Centre. You’ll learn about the project, meet the team and spend time with the young people taking part. Guests tell us it’s one of the highlights of their trip — a chance to see everyday Tanzanian life, and a lovely contrast to days in the bush.

Training young Tanzanians

Alongside Umoja, we offer work experience, training and mentoring to young Tanzanians — helping the next generation of guides, planners and hosts get their start in tourism.

A few kilos of space in your suitcase can make a priceless difference to a local child or family.

Pack for a purpose

We are members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that helps travellers make a lasting difference in the places they visit. If you can spare a little room in your luggage, bring supplies that the projects we support actually need. Ask us for the current list before you pack.

How you can help

  • Ask us to include a visit to the Umoja Centre in your itinerary.
  • Bring supplies from the project’s current list.
  • Give to projects rather than handing out money or gifts at the roadside — see how we travel responsibly.
