Most visitors to Nyerere National Park, spend time along the Rufiji River in the North, which runs into the Indian Ocean. Whilst in Nyerere you can partake in a number of activities, including walks and boat trips.
Introduction
The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in the world, spanning some 54,600 km² and in 1982 was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its diversity in flora and fauna. Now is known as Nyerere National Park. Animal numbers are the highest in Africa; including elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles, although due to the vastness of Selous, animal densities are lower than parks in the north of Tanzania. The landscape is varied, with vast woodlands, wetlands and stretches of savannah.
In 1975, the reserve boasted the largest population of elephants in the world at over 109,000, however by 2013 numbers had dropped to around 13,000 due to high levels of poaching. Tragically there has been over a 90% decrease in elephant and rhino populations in Selous Game Reserve, putting its classification as a World Heritage Site at risk. Anti-poaching task forces (including PAMS Foundation) have had some success in slowing down the rates of poaching and sending a few big ivory dealers to trial. The future of Selous is unsure, but revenue and exposure from tourists certainly help the plight of this rich and great park.
